Jane’s journey with the Humane Society of Hobart began as a fundraising volunteer, helping bring in the support needed to care for animals in the community. In 2020, she stepped into the role of Board President, where she’s been guiding the shelter’s mission ever since. Before that, she was active with the Hobart Jaycees, always finding ways to give back.
With a professional background in special education and vocational rehabilitation, Jane has spent her career advocating for those who need a voice—a passion that naturally extends to animals. She believes every pet deserves compassion, safety, and a loving home.
Outside of board duties, you’ll find Jane at concerts, hiking trails, curled up with a good book, or enjoying life on the shores of Lake Michigan. She’s a devoted Cubs and Bears fan (no matter how much heartbreak they cause) and proud dog mom to Stevie the Wonderdog, her 10-year-old lab with Cerebellar Hypoplasia, who proves every day that special needs pets are just as full of love and joy.
Carl is a lifelong Northwest Indiana resident, having grown up in Lake Station before moving to Portage in 2011 where he resides with his wife, Briana, and two children, Bradley and Carli. Carl currently serves as the Vice President of Development for Lakeshore Public Media, overseeing all aspects of business development and fundraising for the nonprofit organization.
Carl has been involved in animal rescue for roughly 15 years. He and his wife and have fostered dozens of cats and dogs (yes, they failed a few times). The Humane Society of Hobart has always held a special place in their hearts. As a kid, Carl would beg his parents to take him to the shelter so he could walk and play with the animals. While in college he selected HSH as a client for a semester project, and now he's proud to serve on the Board of Directors while continuing to volunteer.
Mike is a retired accounting and finance professional. He and his wife Betina have had multiple rescue pets for 30+ years. Mike stepping into volunteerism all started when they adopted Chloe, their Pekingese mix, the fall of 2017 during a Subaru adoption event sponsored by South Suburban Humane Society. He had a great conversation with several of the volunteers and decided it was time to get involved locally and see what he could do to help with the animal rescue effort.
Mike became an official volunteer in April 2018 and has done most everything from dog walking, veterinary transport, to fundraising and adoption events. Along the way Mike & Betina have adopted four lovables from their mighty little shelter. Mike is now entering his third year as board treasurer, using his financial and accounting background to develop and improve our understanding of the economics behind the effort.
Caris Cardona, now retired, served in education for over 30 years. Her service included being former math teacher, school principal, graduate level Mathematics Instructors at both National Louis University in Chicago and Elementary Education Instructor at Purdue University, University Supervisor, Math Department Chair, National Director of STEM, and was a proud member of the United States National Commission on Mathematics Education.
Caris started volunteering for HSH in 2017 with her son & daughter walking dogs, helping with laundry and her personal favorite, fostering. Since then, her family has fostered numerous litters of puppies and kittens, and volunteering with HSH inspired her daughter pursue a career into Veterinary Medicine. She has served on the HSH Board of Directors since 2020, chairs the HSH Fundraising Team, and lives in East Tennessee with her husband Eddie (an avid Titans fan) and their HSH rescues: dog Henry and cat, Minnie.
