OUR HISTORY
The Humane Society of Hobart, Inc. is a charity registered under IRS 501 (c)(3).
It was founded and received its charter in 1954. Before this time, people were struggling to find a solution to the ever increasing number of strays who often met a cruel fate. With no facility to hold stray and abandoned animals, valuable and loved pets were sometimes cruelly mistreated or euthanized because they had wandered from home; strays were often shot in the streets.
The shelter was founded by a group of local citizens on land donated by Bertha Jacoby. The first president, Morris Cox, started a drive to raise funds, supplies, time, labor, and material…anything people were able to give. Through the help of many, the shelter became a reality.
The Society has provided animal control for the City of Hobart since 1957.
The Humane Society of Hobart is alongside law enforcement when there is an emergency or criminal situation and animals are present. After law enforcement has secured the scene, we proceed to rescue the animals. Sometimes we work with the Indiana State Veterinarian to methodically document all that is needed to care for the animals or prosecute if neglect and cruelty is suspected.
We are contracted with Hobart, Lake Station, and New Chicago to care for their stray population and pet families in need.
Since 2018, we have been providing free, vital vaccines and pet family resources to our community. It's the heart of our mission, because when you help people, you help pets.
The staff and volunteers are true warriors that lead with courage and compassion, daily meeting the challenge of many animals coming to our door in need of emergency medical care and shelter.
💜 The Humane Society of Hobart provides shelter for more than 2,800 pets annually, receives more stray pets than any other agency in Lake County, helps thousands of pet families each year with pet resources and supplies, and is alongside law enforcement to provide animal field services in times of crisis. We are a vital anchor in this community.
We will keep fighting. We believe in our mission to build and strengthen pet families, we believe in humane communities and a no-kill philosophy, we believe in our community, and we believe in this team. Most of all we believe in these beautiful lives that need us...for there is nowhere else to go.
