Carl is a lifelong Northwest Indiana resident, having grown up in Lake Station before moving to Portage in 2011 where he resides with his wife, Briana, and two children, Bradley and Carli. Carl currently serves as the Vice President of Development for Lakeshore Public Media, overseeing all aspects of business development and fundraising for the nonprofit organization.
Carl has been involved in animal rescue for roughly 15 years. He and his wife and have fostered dozens of cats and dogs (yes, they failed a few times). The Humane Society of Hobart has always held a special place in their hearts. As a kid, Carl would beg his parents to take him to the shelter so he could walk and play with the animals. While in college he selected HSH as a client for a semester project, and now he's proud to serve on the Board of Directors while continuing to volunteer.
Mike is a retired accounting and finance professional. He and his wife Betina have had multiple rescue pets for 30+ years. Mike stepping into volunteerism all started when they adopted Chloe, their Pekingese mix, the fall of 2017 during a Subaru adoption event sponsored by South Suburban Humane Society. He had a great conversation with several of the volunteers and decided it was time to get involved locally and see what he could do to help with the animal rescue effort.
Mike became an official volunteer in April 2018 and has done most everything from dog walking, veterinary transport, to fundraising and adoption events. Along the way Mike & Betina have adopted four lovables from their mighty little shelter. Mike is now entering his third year as board treasurer, using his financial and accounting background to develop and improve our understanding of the economics behind the effort.
Caris Cardona, now retired, was in public, private, and parochial education for 28 years as a former math teacher, school principal, university department chair, university supervisor, math department chair, and National Director of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Caris has also taught graduate level mathematics at National Louis University in Chicago, and Elementary Education courses at Purdue University (Westville).
Caris started volunteering for HSH in 2017 with her son & daughter walking dogs. She said the first month she volunteered, she came in one day to help with laundry and left with a litter of puppies to foster. Since then, her family has fostered numerous litters of puppies and kittens, and volunteering inspired her daughter pursue a degree into Veterinary Medicine. Her family even had a 4 month long foster session with a litter of pitbull puppies when everything shut down during COVID. She has served on the HSH Board of Directors since 2020, chairs the HSH Fundraising Team, and lives in East Tennessee with her husband Eddie, an avid Titans fan, and their HSH alumni crew: dog Henry, and cat, Minnie.
